Workshop yang diadakan pada tanggal 15 – 16 September 2008 ini diikuti oleh siswa-siswi sekolah, terutama sekolah-sekolah yang sudah mempunyai kerjasama baik dengan PT. Sasana Boga. SMA Negeri 11 Surabaya salah satunya, mengirimkan 14 siswanya dengan disertai 2 guru pendamping untuk mengikuti workshop tersebut.

Sesuai dengan tema workshop yang mengagungkan tentang software freedom atau open source, materi yang disampaikan kepada peserta workshop kali ini meliputi installasi linux dalam hal ini menggunakan Mandriva, dan peragaan beberapa aplikasi yang ada di dalamnya.

Workshop yang digelar pada pukul 13.00 WIB sampai dengan 16.00 WIB ini mendapat sambutan antusias dari peserta workshop. Penyajian materinya sangat menarik walaupun disampaikan oleh instruktur yang masih berstatus sebagai mahasiswa di salah satu perguruan tinggi negeri di Surabaya. Penjelasan-penjelasannya cukup gamplang, menggunakan bahasa sehari-hari dan jarang-jarang menggunakan istilah asing sehingga mudah diterima oleh peserta workshop.

Workshop ini diawali dengan materi installasi Mandriva ke dalam komputer, yang membutuhkan waktu sekitar 30 menit lamanya. Ternyata, proses instalasi Mandriva tidak berbeda jauh dengan instalasi Ubuntu ke dalam komputer. Mulai awal sampai pada proses pembuatan partisinya semuanya sama, mungkin hanya berbeda pada tampilannya saja.

Sayangnya, tidak dijelaskan secara detail penggunaan Partition Magic untuk menginstall Mandriva pada partisi yang sudah terisi data, sehingga peserta workshop yang rata-rata siswa SMA ini kurang mendapatkan referensi.

Kemudian dilanjutkan dengan pengenalan program-program pada Mandriva, mulai dari program pengolah kata, program pengolah gambar, dan memperagakan kehebatan efek 3D-nya.

Meskipun software free, ternyata Mandriva mempunyai efek 3D yang tidak kalah dengan sistem operasi berbayar seperti Microsoft Windows. Efek 3Dnya sungguh mengagumkan, saya terkesan dengan penampilan Mandriva ini. Sayangnya, saya sudah terlanjur jatuh cinta kepada Ubuntu.
